Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument was established within the Deschutes National Forest in 1990 to protect its natural treasures.   Newberry is a “Composite Volcano” that encompasses approximately 1,200 square miles, making it the broadest volcano in the Oregon Cascades.  Newberry has undergone countless eruptions, including one that collapsed its core, leaving a caldera 5 miles by 4 miles.  Within the caldera are East Lake and Paulina Lake( seen in the image below).  Both Lakes have hot springs generated by underlying magma flows.  Fishing is excellent in the caldera lakes, including a state record 28 pound, 5 ounce Brown Trout caught in Paulina Lake in 2002.  There are well equipped campgrounds at both Paulina and East Lake. Hiking trails abound within the national monument, including the Big Obsidian Flow trail.  The Big obsidian trail is found on the south side of the caldera and travels 1 mile across Oregon’s youngest lava flow. The lava flow is composed largely of obsidian, a black volcanic glass.

The view from the summit of Paulina Peak, in Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument is moving during any time of the day and stunning at sunrise. At 7,989 feet, Paulina Peak towers over the remainder of the Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument.  The view from the summit is sweeping.  Only open to car traffic in summer, Paulina peak offers view of Mt. Bachelor, the Three Sisters, Broken Top,  Black Butte, and Paulina Lake, 2,500 feet below! I had traveled to Pauliina Peak several times in the past before I captured this beautiful fine art photograph of Newberry Crater.  Warm sunlight embracing the pinnacles of Paulina Peak, mesmerizing cloud patterns over the Central Oregon Cascades, and mist on Paulina Lake make for a stunning fine art print!  To purchase this fine art photograph of Newberry Crater, click the blue button above and you will be directed toward  drop-downs which offers print size and print media options.  You do NOT nee a paypal account to purchase off of my website.  You will be directed to a paypal page but at the bottom of that page, there is a “purchase with Credit Card “option.  Feel free to contact me with further question about this fine art print by using this Contact Form.
