In 1806, William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame were searching for the body of a whale which had washed ashore on the Oregon coast and during the search, they discovered a Creek which they named Ecola Creek which originated from the Chinook word for whale, “ekoli”. Ecola State Park was later named after Ecola Creek.
