Kirkjufellfoss Waterfall

Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland

Kirkjufellfoss Waterfall Fine Art Photograph. This iconic location is one of Iceland’s most scenic and most popular for landscape photographers traveling through Iceland. Located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula near the fishing village of Grundarfjörður.  Kirkjufellfoss roughly translates to waterfall of church mountain, which sums up its essence. A waterfall and a beautiful mountain which looks like a church. This waterfall, in an of itself is not worth a stop on your Iceland road trip. However, when you combine the stunning backdrop of Kirkjufell, the waterfalls as well as Kirkjufellsá river winding its way into the Atlantic ocean waiting below.

My Wife, Dr.Debbie Putnam

and two other friends visited Iceland for a friend’s wedding. Hey Stephanie! We added a few extra days to explore Iceland which several other friends had raved about. Iceland is undeniably beautiful. Hundreds different roadside attractions would the most remarkable natural features in many other countries. Our trip was short so we narrowed our list of sites to see and Kirkjufell made the list. Predictable, our weather in Iceland wasn’t optimal for landscape photography. Most of our days were marked by wind, rain and overcast skies. The night before I captured this beautiful fine art photograph of Kirkjufellfoss, we had visited the waterfall. Just a quarter mile from the falls is a large parking area and a well worm path to several prominent viewpoints. during that visit, the light was somber and gray with light rain and strong winds. Not optimal for a landscape photographer. That evening we had dinner at a wonderful, homey European/Scandinavian restraurant, Bjargarsteinn mathus. I highly recommend it! Lat that night we were fortunate enough to get peaks of the Northern Lights while the clouds occasionally parted. The next morning, cloud levels lad lifted so I quickly gathered my photography equipment and headed back to the waterfall. Photography conditions were momentarily excellent with colorful morning clouds and occasional sun breaks illuminating the flanks of Kirkjufell mountain. I’m thrilled to have made the extra trip to this scenic location before continuing our Icelandic journey!
