Titcomb Basin, Wind River Range

Wyoming’s Bridger Wilderness Area

Wyoming has many natural wonders, but few compare to the raw magic of Titcomb Basin. Tucked deep inside the Bridger Wilderness, this dramatic alpine valley sits at over 10,500 feet. It is flanked on three sides by massive granite sentinels of the Continental Divide. For backpackers willing to put in the miles, it offers an unforgettable immersion into the high rocky wilderness.
The Trail and Journey
The adventure starts at the Elkhart Park Trailhead, located about 15 miles northeast of Pinedale, Wyoming. Most hikers turn the journey into a 4-day, 3-night backpacking trip.
  • The Distance: Roughly 28 to 32 miles out-and-back, depending on your exact campsite choices and side explorations.
  • Elevation Profile: Expect a cumulative elevation gain of around 3,100 feet as you roll over rugged terrain.
  • Key Landmarks: The path leads past Photographer’s Point, beautiful subalpine lakes like Hobbs and Little Seneca, and the breathtaking expanse of Island Lake.
Landscape and Scenery
Once you step into Titcomb Basin, trees disappear, replaced by a stark, striking landscape of polished stone, rushing meltwater, and alpine tundra. Two large, sapphire-blue glacial lakes stretch across the valley floor, mirroring the imposing vertical faces of Mount Helen, Mount Woodrow Wilson, and Fremont Peak. At the northern head of the basin, hanging glaciers cling to the rock, feeding the icy waters below.
Practical Planning Tips
  • Best Time to Go: Late July through September offers the most favorable weather and melted trails. Early July can still feature stubborn snowpacks and heavy mosquito activity.
  • Weather Warnings: High-elevation mountain weather shifts rapidly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, meaning early starts are vital to avoid exposed ridges.
